Hermann Hesse on the three types of readers and why the most transcendent form of reading Is non-reading

For this reader follows the poet not the way a horse obeys his driver but the way a hunter follows his prey, and a glimpse suddenly gained into what lies beyond the apparent freedom of the poet, into the poet’s compulsion and passivity, can enchant him more than all the elegance of good technique and cultivated style.

Best campsite on Earth?

We only walked up for the day. Another couple are settled in for the night. If I’d had more time, I’d have stayed late and hiked down in the dark… what must the night sky look like here? …oh well, we’ll just have to come back. :D

More from Courchevel

Two days before we left home, the plans changed to include the detour to Courchevel… Best spontaneous detour EVER! One week with Yamakasi at summer camp??? omfgyesPLEASE!!

ɕ

One more from Annecy

Flipping thru photos this morning, just another random shot from Annecy… if it looks like this in the rain, it must be unbelievable when it’s sunny with blue skis!

ɕ

Alpine flowers

Sorting through some photos and this one is superlative. Everything here makes you want walk, run, swim, move move move!!

Mountain to myself at 2200m

I rode the upper gondola down and slogged back up a couple hundred meters. There’s no one within a quarter mile. Just this view, the sun, the wind… I believe I’ve discovered the perfect spot for a siesta . . .

ɕ

2700m

Granted, I ascended by gondola, but the view is still impressive!

Au revoir England

Leaving St Pancras station this morning en route to Paris. When I was in high school, I saw a TV show (yes, pre-internet) about some crazy engineers who were going to try tunneling thru the chalk under the channel. “How awesome would it be to ride THAT train?!” Bit sad to say goodbye to all my friends (old and new) in London, but we will meet again! Allez! Allez!

Did you say ‘climbing challenge’?!

Blane setup several climbing challenges in our last session. This was the easiest, but so fun! Was hangin as the coppers rolled by… “and you sir! how old are you?! You should know better!”

ɕ

The White Cliffs of Dover

Another thing I thought I’d never see! I came straight from Heathrow …just hiked two hours from the train station at Dover Priory. TOTALLY worth it.
